The Himuro Mansion Haunting

HimuroAccording to urban legend, lying just beyond the city of Tokyo is one of the most haunted locations in all of Japan. The exact location of the Himuro Mansion (or Himikyru Mansion as it is sometimes known) is widely unknown but the legend puts the mansion in a rocky region just beyond the city limits of Tokyo.   The mansion is said to have been home to one of the most gruesome murders in modern Japanese history. Local lore has it that for generations, the Himuro family had participated in a strange, twisted Shinto ritual known as “The Strangling Ritual” in order to seal off bad karma from within the Earth, every half century or so. The most popular version of the tale states that bad karma would emerge each December (other versions simply say “toward the end of the year”) from a portal on the Mansions grounds. In order to prevent this, a maiden was chosen at birth by the master of the household and isolated from the outside world in order to prevent her from developing any ties to the outside world, which would in turn, jeopardize the effect of the ritual.  Read More

I have actually visited the mansion (or I should say, viewed it) from the Choko woods not far from Tokyo.

We didn't dare go into the grounds; it was terrifying discovering it existed. But it's there.

It's old and crumbling, and there's warning signs around it saying the upper floors were crumbling, so it's probably not safe to poke around inside.

Beautiful old building, very spooky - the area is desolate. I'd advise a visit, but heed the warnings and I wouldn't announce it to the locals (the authorities can actually forbid you from going up there; they stopped tourism about 30years ago and restricted the remaining Himuro family from the grounds, also).

It's fake. It's a story made up to promote the Fatal Frame game. I already asked a lot of my japanese friends about it and they have no idea what i'm talking about. if it was so famous, how can people living in tokyo not know about it?
